Eroge Review (23): YU-NO
Here is a review of Kono yo no hate de koi wo utau shoujo YU-NO (この世の果てで恋を唄う少女YU-NO), made by elf.

Overall score: 9/10
Genre:
Mystery. Drama. Adventure. A bit of comedy and SF.
Plot summary:
Without including spoilers, the main protagonist goes through many parallel worlds to solve mysteries surrounding his father and the city.
*Play time: About 30-50 hours total. (Will depend on how efficiently you play through the first half)
Characters:
Arima Takuya: Protagonist. Random, hilarious.
Arima Ayumi: Mother-in-law.
Hatano Kanna: Quiet, mysterious girl.
Shimadu Mio: Rich girl. Tsundere. Has awesome drill hair.
Ichijou Mitsuki: Mature woman.
Story: 9/10
This is a story with a massive scope, and the story is much longer than what you may think at first. It’s hard to describe it without spoiling the story, so I won’t. I’ll just say that it’s well thought-out and beautifully integrated to the game system.
The mystery in this game is top-notch. The mysteries just keep popping up one after another, and it would make you keep playing the game.
The comedy in the game is great too. Imagine a protag from like ONE or Brass Restoration.
On the downside, the tension in some scenes are lost because you have to click everything to advance and because it’s really bothersome to move between places. It sometimes gets super long in between important events because you have to go get items.
Oh yeah, most of the girls in this game aren’t that attractive or moe(in my opinion).
Graphics: 4/10
The graphic is old, but it’s still bearable. It was good back when it came out, but I honestly can’t say it’s good now. The art does match the atmosphere of the game, though. And it has over 230 CGs (according to the CG section).
Music: 6/10
The music sounds old, but I think it’s still good. There aren’t any vocals or anything, but the music really helps create the atmosphere of the game.
System: 8/10
The story is integrated to the game system very well. In fact, the game system has to be there for this scenario. The adventure system is interesting, but it also does get very tedious, especially when you have to move between lots of places and click everywhere. Some items are very hard to find, and you may be forced to play through routes over and over again. This gets really bothersome, especially since the game does not have skip read text feature.
Ero: 2/10
Uhh… Yeah, it’s nothing much. The text isn’t that great, and the old graphic doesn’t help either. The fact that I didn’t like half the characters didn’t help either. Do not play this game for the ero (you shouldn’t be in the first place).
Overall: 9/10
Even though this is an old game, it’s still a masterpiece. It’s hard to recommend to people since it’s so old, but I would still recommend people to play this game if they do not mind old games and are even slightly interested.
Recommended for: People who want mystery, drama, suspense. People wanting to play a classic masterpiece.
Not recommended for: People who do not like bothersome adventure systems, people who want ero, people who hate incest, and people who cannot stand old games.

I would rather compare Takuya to a mixture of Clannad’s Tomoya (actually Clannad took quite a few things from YU-NO) and EVE Burst Error’s Kojiroh, while adding some extra considerate, gentle attitude, perseverance and revenge-determination to the mix. He really is a funny and witty, yet well developed, and enjoyable protagonist.
. I have like 5 favorite female characters in it, and I’d have a hard time reducing it to only one.
>”The fact that I didn’t like half the characters didn’t help either. ”
I can barely imagine why
The main heroine is just incredibly moe (when she comes with her pillow for example, daaaaw~), Sayless is the best wife ever created, Mio is one of the best tsunderes I’ve seen, Kanna is an incredibly delicious/moe coodere, while Eriko is awesome and really fun to be with.

“People who do not like bothersome adventure systems”
Does this still apply if you plan on using a walkthrough?

^
That’s the walkthrough for the normal routes. It shows which locations you have to move, and who are you meeting there, which items you are picking up/using etc.
Otherwise you have to show a bit of common sense though, and choose the obvious options to advance the story. It isn’t really difficult at all IMO. The point and click interface (which is used about 2/3 of the whole game) makes it quite easy.

no wonder there’s no one vote YU-NO under 10 point(s) in vndb.
I remember this game long long time ago and it bring some nostalgic feeling.
Miss it >_<
the protag is quite funny, you're right izm, he's similar to Tomoya.
