Eroge Review (24): Sengoku Rance
This time, I’ll review something I’ve actually translated! Here is a review of Sengoku Rance, made by Alicesoft.
Overall score: 9.5/10
Genre:
Strategy game. Comedy, drama.
Plot summary:
In the east of the continent lies an island country called Japan. Many feudal lords are fighting for supremacy in this country at this age of civil wars. Rance, who is called a brute and has done as he pleases in the continent, has come to Japan with his slave, Sill.
Hot spring vacation?
No. He is going to go to the hot spring, but Rance’s intention is to have sex with all the beautiful princess, maid, miko, and townswomen. He is especially interested in Princess Kou of the Oda family, the strongest force in Japan.
This is a strategy game where Rance fights in Japan.
*Play time: About 20 hours for the first playthrough. 50-100+ hours total, depending on how addicted you get.
Story: 7/10
This game has a pretty decent story, which is better than what I expected from a gameplay-heavy eroge. The story is good even as a standalone.
What really stands out in the text is the comedy. The game has many funny scenes, and even the Hscenes are funny (I think the funniest scenes are Leila’s Hscene and Kou’s dango Assassination3). Another special thing about this game is that despite the amount of characters in this game, most characters are unique and memorable with a decent amount of events for each character (which was a bitch during translation, though ^^;).
Gameplay: 10/10
If this game does not get a 10 in gameplay, I don’t know what game will. I think this game has the best gameplay eroge has to offer. This game is very, very, very, very addictive. This game has kept me awake for many nights, and will drain anybody’s time away. There is so much to do in the first playthrough, more in the second, and just keeps going from there. There’s also the progress report for the perfectionists.
To explain a bit about the game, this is a turn based strategy game where you control Rance, who is trying to take over all of Japan. You can wage war, construct stuff, increase affection of fellow commanders, and do much more.
If you haven’t played the game yet, just go play it. However, make sure that there’s nothing important coming up in the next several days because you will get addicted and will do nothing but play this game once you start.
In short, awesome addicting gameplay.
Graphics: 7/10
The graphics are good. There are graphics in all important parts of the story and at least one CG for each important character. No CG looked odd, and I like the coloring of the CGs.
Music: 9/10
The music in this game is AWESOME. There are so many BGMs I like, such as Ontology, Rebirth the edge (the best), and Mars. The music really helps bring out the best in the game. Some BGMs really enhance the scenes to get your blood pumping, like in the final battle scene at the Tenma Bridge.
The only problem I have is that you hear some BGMs way too often (like normal battle BGM) and you get tired of it.
System: 4/10
The game has message speeds, effect speeds, skipping texts, and screen size, and that’s it. Even though it’s not much, I think this is enough for this game. I really don’t see any other options that the game needs.
The game also has CG mode, music mode, and scene replay, but it’s annoying how they can only be accessed from in-game and not from the title screen.
A big negative is that the all-attack effect hits each commander one by one and is really annoying.
Oh, and although I don’t really care, it may annoy some people that this game has no voices.
Ero: 5/10
The ero is pretty good. Although most scenes only have 1 CG, it makes up by having many Hscenes. There are many different kinds of Hscenes, rape included (not my thing, though). Most characters have at least one Hscene, so there’s a high likelihood that there’s an Hscene of a character you like. However, the game did not have Omachi’s Hscene, which is a very big negative for me.
Overall: 9.5/10
If you want gameplay, play this game before any other game. This game is better than most console games out there. This game is very addictive and is the kind of game that you can enjoy for a very long time. This game is a true masterpiece. Gahahahaha.
Recommended for: People who want gameplay, people who want comedy, people who want awesome music, and people who like lots of girls in their games.
Not recommended for: People who can’t stand rape, people who don’t want hard gameplay, people who need voices, and people who hate selfish protagonists.

just wondering, is majikoi that hard to hack? It seems you guys have been at it for a long time and I’m starting to get worried on the aspect of it being a project
January 8th, 2010 at 9:28 am 2
There’s one thing I don’t agree with and that’s about music. I couldn’t stand it. Had to turn it off very early (but it happens to me often).

I don’t think people who don’t like hard gameplay should worry. You can easily use something like Art Money or Cheat Engine to hack yourself a lot of money or 999 rance points. That’s what I did in my first couple of playthroughs while learning the basics of it.

Woo a translation group that picked an Alicesoft game! Thanks so much for your work guys, I couldn’t believe it when I found this site. I saw in the older posts that you might consider Daiakuji as another Alicesoft project in the future? That would be awesome!
I thought that after Sengoku Rance, people would want games with a different kind of gameplay like the Escalayer/Haruka or the Toushin Toshi series forgetting about poor Akuji or Ryouga but man if you ever pick those up… (yup, I’m an huge Akuji fan^^; probably my favorite Alice game)
There’s often rape/torture/murder in Alicesoft games but at the same time there’s so much comedy/humor that you never feel bad about it. I for one don’t like the character of Rance (too selfish!) but the amount of comedy still made the game so enjoyable to read. And the gameplay’s so addicting as well^^
Thank you very much for that release guys and I hope you won’t burn out despite working so fast!

Couldn’t agree more. The sheer dimension of this game boggles your very mind. The amount of care and attention to detail that went into it really makes it special. I find myself uninstalling it and jamming the DVD on the back of the shelf from time to time just so I can stop myself from pulling all-nighters playing it. It’s one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played and I’m not even a strategy fan.
The english-speaking eroge community is truly in your debt, kind sir. It was well worth the wait.

Uh, well the Oda family isn’t exactly powerful when you first join them really, aside in that tho pretty much in full agreement. I still don’t understand why Omachi wasn’t given a HCG, I mean come on! They afraid she was going to turn them into charcoal or something? I demand more Omachi ero! Bah, either way it’s stil la great game, good job on this title.
January 10th, 2010 at 6:36 pm 7
Eh I couldn’t play this game for very long; can’t stand the main character. Although, the gameplay was pretty fun.

Yeah, Rance is hard to get used to, but after a while, you realize, that he is not despicable, but extremely “simple-minded”, not to mention funny, so you stop hating him. Or at least, this was the case with me.
January 11th, 2010 at 12:10 am 9
Frankly, I though he was hilarious from the very moment the story started (after the initial fight, that is).
January 12th, 2010 at 5:38 am 10
omachi ero?
there’s a fan made picture featuring ero-omachi
I don’t remember get it from where or who ?_?
woah, for me the overall score 10/10
Excellent!
January 14th, 2010 at 3:15 pm 11
Who was Omachi? It’s been so long since I played this (and I loved it by the way, but never went into the youkai territory). I take it Omachi is someone from there.
January 14th, 2010 at 9:21 pm 12
Yeah totally agree with the review !
SR was awesome, played it again and again and again. And I still have so much to do and routes to play through.
Too bad the next game is a R&C novel, SR So opened my appetite for more game of the kind ^^.
January 16th, 2010 at 10:39 am 13
Man this game is awesome, I just finished my 3rd playtrough (yamamoto and kenshin routes) and it feels i have so much to do! killing orochi, getting the shimazu brothers, conquering the youkai empire or banging the mori sisters… I guess I’ ll just have to play it again.
thanks for the translation and keep up with the good work!
January 16th, 2010 at 2:09 pm 14
One awesome game I played before it got translated. Rance is pretty awesome and having this game translated made some scenes make even more sense than before when I just read it raw.
January 24th, 2010 at 9:44 pm 15
Seriously, When I first try the game, I’m not interested since there is no character voice in the game. Then I read your Review and force myself to play the game. Nowww…It’s a week and I still can’t stop playing it everyday…..T_T

February 20th, 2010 at 10:51 am 21
Is it possible that you translate previous rance games?
March 13th, 2010 at 5:40 am 22
How about giving Alivez a go? Seems veeeery interesting
March 13th, 2010 at 9:04 pm 23
I’m going to have to second on the hope you decide to translate more rance in the future! I played the death out of this. Was awesome, thanks so much for your hard work.
Rance 6 looks like it would be worth translating, since it has similar story/gameplay, though I dunno enough to really ask someone to translate it (it may simply not be worth it). Unfortunately, the next rance game is going to be a remake, from what wiki says.
I want to know what happens to Sil

@takaJun:
I’m thinking why you rated the system as 4/10, is because of the game’s exe file “system40.exe”. Wait…am I just having a wild imagination?
March 15th, 2010 at 8:11 am 25
is there any chance yandere considered translating the new complete remake of Rance 02 ?
March 15th, 2010 at 3:48 pm 26
>>kidlat020
The score on the system is low because lack of some options like skipping all-attack effects and not being able to access CG/music mode from the title screen.
>>Mutsume
No. I haven’t played it, and there are other games on queue right now.
As for what to translate next, I’ll think about that after I finish translating Majikoi.
March 19th, 2010 at 6:05 am 27
so it’s just my wild imagination…
would you kindly translate this for next, next, next (no matter how many next it would take) next project http://vndb.org/v666

There is an H-Scene for Omachi! You have to get the stone that she turns into by capturing her and then give it to The One Eyed Youkai after you make him a captain which restores her form. Get her to 7 trust then either fire or kill One Eye in battle and an event shows up that lets you bang her
May 11th, 2010 at 11:04 am 29
He Yandere trans, i have to thank you fully for your great translation of Sengoku Rance and keep up the god work (because it isn’t inished perfectly yet no ?)
If i might as a question, where can i download the previous Rance games
(original stories not IF games) which are 6 parts if im correct, and how many have been translated into English or have patches and where ?
Thank you and keep up the epic work.
May 23rd, 2010 at 9:56 pm 30
One of the few H-Games where I play it for the game, rather than the H. If there was a patch that removed the H-CGs, I’d so take it.
June 18th, 2010 at 8:35 am 31
Love the Girl-Girl Graphics
June 19th, 2010 at 7:47 pm 32
Yeah, I hated how they didn’t show the scene for Omachi even though they implied it.
August 19th, 2010 at 3:30 am 33
This is the best visual novel i ever play……

btw the girl i like is sill, number 2 is ran… kekekekeee….. i don’t care if omachi H-CG not showed…..
